Hiya,

Just to let you know that php seems to be working alright
now. It was already installed but there was no php.ini
file... there is now. And I also found out that the
apache server was set to use only .php extentions. The
php files I had written had .php3 extentions. I changed
the extentions on my scripts and also added to the
httpd.conf file so that apache will recongnize .php3
extentions as well... in case there are some files with
those extentions that I missed.

You can see php in action on this page I created to
allow one to try out different backgrounds for mvd
docs:

http://www.global-dialog.org/graphics/background.php

~~

Also in the private file area of the mvd there are
now working utilites written in php which will allow
an mvd user to check the stats ( file size; creation
date; etc. ) of their own private mvd files as well
as the ability to rename, copy or delete them without
needing to log on to the server as root. A user can
only modify files they themselves have created...
i.e. the files in their private file list.

On the private file list page for an mvd user there
is also a link to a php utility to allow one to upload
files without needing to use ftp. If one uploads an
html file an entry for it will be added to their private
file list.

One needs to input a valid mvd username and password
before they are allowed to use either of those utilities.

When I was checking out the php installation I also noticed
that mysql seems to be installed as well, which I didn't
realize. Php works well with mysql according to what
I have read... I will have to check that out and see
what interesting use I can make of that.

~~

Also I installed a pico clone program called nano... so
anyone used to editing in pico will have no problem using
nano... supposedly it has some enhancements which pico
doesn't... Here is the nano website which has all the
info about it:

http://www.nano-editor.org/docs.html

~~

In regard to hosting domain names... for example the
"mariposy.net" domain I have registered. The main sysop
there would need to update the nameserver records ( and
secondary nameserver possibly ) and assign an ip address to
that domain... and basically do everything that was done
to setup global-dialog.org. Httpd.conf would need to be
updated as well. I would then need to know the nameserver
info ( the address of the main and secondary nameservers )
in order to update the records for the domain where I
registered the domain ( in my case Network Solutions...
or were they bought out by Verisign? ).

I don't know if I know enough about that to be messing
around with those nameserver records etc. there... nor
would it be appropriate probably to do that either...
I am not sure what kind of costs and resources that would
involve so maybe the main dude there ( Ethan? ) would have
to decide on that and take care of the work on that end
if such a thing was ok.

~~

Anyway this justs lets you know some of the things I have
been doing... I hope all goes well on your end.

love and hugs,
Gerry
